ONE of the major purchases by families at Christmas – alongside the presents and the turkey – is a new television.
While households today are opting for 50 inch screens, HD and surround sound for their festive TV watching, it was a little different back in 1971.
For this advert from DER, Domestic Electric Rentals, urged customers to try its famous luxury widescreen, 17inch Starmaster set.
At only 9s 2d a week, reducing to 5s 9d and with no deposit, it was an offer to make homeowners’ happiest Christmas, and New Year too.
DER boasted the finest service in Britain – with free service, repairs and replacements.
Rent was all you paid – and there was immediate delivery.
The Blackburn showroom, in Preston New Road, had an unusual telephone number – Blakewater 42337. It was open until 9pm on Friday evenings, for demonstrations.
