NO matter what your style or how much vintage you own, there are always one or two vintage eras that appeal to you more than others.

I know for me, the 50s and 60s have a very special place in my heart. I adore the full skirted swing skirts, slinky wiggle dresses and rock ‘n’ roll threads of the 1950s.

I equally love the sleek retro mod look of the 1960s, the Jackie O suits, Twiggy shift dresses and Mary Quant minis.

Here is my quick and easy guide to getting decade dressing just right. With a bit of imagination and the right ideas for each era, you can use vintage, retro and modern fashion to achieve your perfect look.

1920s The 20s’ silhouette was, if anything, quite shapeless. If you want to dress the Gatsby way, think drop waist and sheath dresses, palazzo trousers and close-fitting (cloche) hats. This is also the decade for all that glitters – beads, sequins, feather and fringe are a must.

1930s The main focus in the 1930s was the bias cut. Think pure vintage Hollywood glamour and go for full length evening gowns, cut on the bias, in silks and satins. Deep jewel tones are best and accentuate with costume jewellery.

1940s With the war came austerity and even clothing was rationed. The 1940s silhouette became very fitted and there was emphasis on the shoulders. Shirtwaister tea dresses are also a staple, in ditsy floral prints that were easy to match up.

1950s In stark contrast to the forties, the 50s’ New Look was about the biggest skirts and the boldest prints. Full circle dresses, cottons, chiffons, silks, novelty prints, you can have real fun with 50s’ fashion. In my opinion, it's the most flattering era to recreate for all shapes and sizes.

1960s The sixties has a real androgynous take on fashion. Lines were clean, shift dresses and knee boots, pale lips and dark eyes. An almost futuristic look for most young girls. No midi length here it’s one or the other. Boxy shifts, crimplene and lots of monochrome.

1970s Things got a little crazy in the 70s and there are many looks you can go for.

From the floaty sweeping evening maxi dresses to the tiny hotpants and sequins of the disco dancefloor.

Or you can channel Woodstock with crochet outfits, floppy sun hats and love beads. Denim is great, flares are huge and bras are optional!

1980s Many say the eighties is the decade style forgot but I disagree. Many of the looks we love in 2014 were born here.

The peplum, the bodycon dress, denim shorts, slogan tees and even leathers. From Madonna to Cyndi Lauper and everything in between, the 80s was all about excess.

And huge shoulder pads.
