I'M not sure if it's the return of Strictly Come Dancing to our TV screens or the impending promise of glitzy Christmas parties, but it's that time of year when everyone seems to want one thing. Sequins.

Sequins can also be referred to as spangles, paillettes, or diamantes. Paillettes themselves are commonly very large and flat. Sequins may be stitched flat to the fabric, so that they do not move, and are less likely to fall off; or they may be stitched at only one point, so that they dangle and move easily, to catch more light. Some sequins are made with multiple facets to increase their reflective ability. All in all the more sparkle the better in my book!

Sequins were used as far back as Egyptian and Ancient Greek times, originally made from coins and other metals. Sequins first came over to Europe with the gypsies who wore them sewn onto their clothing. Throughout the vintage fashion decades, sequins have always played a part in design, epitomising glitz and glamour. From the full sequin embellished flapper dresses of the 1920s through to the big shoulder padded sequin suits of the 1980s Dynasty era and not fogetting 1970s sequin boob tubes and hotpants!

Whether it be a sequin blazer, a shimmering cocktail dress or a bejewelled skirt, it's likely that you've got something sparkly in your wardrobe, be it new or vintage. Vintage sequin pieces are some of my absolute favourite things and Christmas is the perfect time to wear them in all their sparkling glory.

Here are some of my favourite vintage sequin pieces currently in stock at My Vintage.
