Hello
It was with great sadness that I read of Derek's passing. He was my manager when we both worked at the Mill Hill branch of the Trustee Savings Bank way back in 1969/71. I was only 19 at the time but I have very happy memories of working with Derek, particularly his dry sense of humour. It was the first time I had come across anyone who had baked beans or soup for their lunch in the branch staff room, whilst reading the Financial Times! He was great fun, there were just the three of us at the time in the branch, Derek, Joan Simms and myself before I moved onto the Darwen branch. In those days we used to get a lot of customers coming into the branch for a "pound of gas shillings" for their meters. This always used to amuse us, particularly Derek, not quite what we were there for. I left the TSB in 1972 to work for Thomas Cook , the first person I asked for a reference was Derek to which he agreed only if I bought him a pint. I happily paid him back later, but if cost me more than one pint!!
Please accept my sincere sympathy, as I say, I have very fond memories of Mr Behan
