Blackburn Rovers have extended the contracts of Sam Gallagher and Tyrhys Dolan by 12 months and are in discussions with Kyle McFadzean and John Fleck over new deals.

Rovers had to inform the English Football League of their decisions by Saturday, May 18 and have now publicly released their retained list.

It contains few surprises from the first-team squad. Gallagher and Dolan were both out of contract in 2024 but with 12-month extensions in their deals, which have been formally triggered.

Rovers remain in discussions with both players about signing fresh terms. Gregg Broughton revealed in March that contracts had been offered but neither signed or rejected, with talks over their long-term futures set to take place this summer.

The likelihood is both players will either accept new contracts or risk being sold in the transfer window. Gallagher was the subject of bids up to £1.5million from Ipswich Town in January whilst Dolan has been previously linked with Premier League moves.

McFadzean and Fleck were both out of contract too after signing short-term deals in January. The Lancashire Telegraph revealed last week that the former was in talks and wanted to stay at Ewood Park despite interest elsewhere.

Fleck only played 17 minutes for Rovers after suffering a shin injury which required surgery. He has struggled to stay fit consistently in the last 18 months and is now 32.

However, with John Eustace keen to balance his squad with more experience, Rovers are open to the idea of him staying on. The club are likely to provide a further update on McFadzean and Fleck's deals, which officially expire on June 30, later down the line.

Of the Academy prospects, Sam Barnes has been released. The young defender had a promising pre-season in 2022 but suffered a serious knee injury in training.

He returned last summer, only for a similarly long-term thigh injury to keep him out for the entirety of the season. Rovers have now made the tough decision to let the 23-year-old leave. He had been with the club since the age of 11.

Lenni Cirino, Ben Fyles, Jay Haddow, Jared Harlock, Ethan Walker and Charlie Weston, along with second year scholar Ben Thirkill, have been released. Isaac Whitehall, Jalil Saadi and Alex Baker have all been offered new deals with the club.

Dominik Biniek, Adam Caddick, Charlie Olson, George Pratt and Harrison Wood have all had options in their contracts activated and so have 12 months left to run.
