The following is a book review, written by Hilary Austin, Learning Mentor at St. Andrews's C.E Primary School, Oswaldtwistle.
One of my favourite books is A Kestrel for a Knave by Barry Hines. Hines paints a picture of a troubled teenager who lives an unhappy life in a deprived mining town in Yorkshire.
This modern classic describes the main character, Billy Casper, as an academic failure who has been written off by his teachers.

He attends a tough local school and appears to have little to contribute to society as he approaches the transition from school to the workplace.
However, Billy's interest in falconry results in his desire to learn how to hand rear a kestrel, which he does successfully all by himself by studying reference books, despite his difficulty with reading.
I think this novel shows us that everyone can achieve something in life however difficult the circumstances if you truly believe you can make it happen.
Definitely a captivating read, still as relevant today as when it was written in the 1960's with many facets that most of us can relate to.
