I recently spoke to former Sunnyhurst councillor, Mr. Nigel Nuttall and there were a few things he mentioned during our conversation that I decided the people of Darwen need to have a say on.

Despite the fact that parking in Darwen is free, this is not advertised on road signs or promotional signs.

Darwen could be missing out on a great deal of trade because of this.

The old health centre on Union Street has now been demolished but the disabled parking bays remain.

Myself and Nigel discussed that it would serve better to have the disabled bays closer to the centre of town and nearer the shops and have the Union Street bays reviewed as to their necessity.

Finally, we chatted about the state of Darwen's roads. There does seem to be a disproportionate number of potholes in Darwen's roadways and I'm sure some are due to receive the TLC they clearly need.

Robin Bank Street leading to Frederick Street and Anyon Street are two areas that spring immediately to mind for me, but where else needs attention?

So c'mon Darwen residents! Tell us what you think of these issues and if you want to raise any of your own - get in touch with me on 01254 298395.

I agree that it would be useful to make more of the fact that parking is free in Darwen. I used to travel to Halifax frequently and was always pleasantly surprised by a sign saying something like "Welcome to Halifax - a car friendly town with over 900 FREE parking spaces" (that's not word for word, but you get the idea!). Why can't Darwen have something similar?

As regards potholes - where do we start? Harwood Street is a disgrace. So is Tockholes Road. I'm sure there are many, many more which we've become so used to that they don't even register on the brain now!!
