Local History - Royal Butterfly Hotel 9:53am Tue 1 Apr 08 At the junction of Hollingreave Road & Huffling Lane stands the Royal Butterfly Hotel, which was built in the early 19th century. The Hotel is in fact named after a champion, shorthorn bull of the Towneley herd. His elder brother,Master Butterfly, was sold for,was sold for then a record amount and shipped to Australia. St.Stephen's Church, Oxford Road. 11:25am Mon 3 Mar 08 Concecrated in 1879, St. Stephen's Church is a handsome edifice in the Gothic style of architecture. It cost £8,500 and was designed by Mr.James Green of Portsmouth. The clock was erected by executors of the late MRS. Parkinson of Hollingreave, who also presented the stained glass window-the Matyrdom of St. Stephen. The Church has an impressive tower, topped with a crenellated parapet, and a stair turret in the N.W.Corner. And is the dominant landmark in the area. Local History-Oxford Road Bridge. 2:03pm Thu 24 Jan 08 As late as 1872 the few people living in Burnley Wood had to use stepping stones to cross the River Calder at this point. In times of flood this could be dangerous and in the records it is recorded that two poeple died during one stage. The town council eventually responded by spending £45 to provide a wooden footbridge. This was inadequate and the locals were only appeased when they bulit a wider bridge in 1883 at the cost of £2,000. This has now been replaced by a newer and stronger bridge.
