Haslingden's Panopticon "Halo" has failed to win an award after being shortlisted for the Structural Steel Design Awards. Its counterpart at Crown Point, Burnley, "The Singing Ringing Tree", however, gained a certificate of merit. Perhaps they could jack Halo up then we might be able to see it!

United Utilities and the RSPB are organising a series of walks around Haslingden Grane. They take place on Saturday 19th July, Sunday 31st August and Sunday 5th October starting at 10am. Each walk will cover around 5 miles and places are limited. Booking is essential so contact 07824 604277

Haslingden Library has created “Headspace” a creative and flexible area for young people where they can relax, interact and make the most of reading experiences. The externally funded project is looking for young people between the ages of 11 and 19 who are interested in volunteering opportunities within Headspace. Contact - 01706 215690.

Proposals to gate off a problem alleyway on Manchester Rd, Haslingden (reported previously) are still to be decided. A petition against the closure has been submitted with 750 signatures. People who live in the area now have until the 31st July to make their views known. 92 incidents were reported in the alleyway over the past two years,

Helmshore Primary School is presenting the musical Grease at Haslingden High School’s theatre. The production runs from the 9th to the 12th of July and curtain up is at 7pm. £4 for adults and £3 for children.

A legendary Haslingden stray cat well known to residents has been helped by a lady from Clegg Street. The feline who has hobbled around the town for years has now had its injured leg amputated and should be fighting fit again soon. Well done Mrs Russell.

A number of telephone boxes in Haslingden and Helmshore are under the axe due to lack of use and vandalism. Residents of Bury Road, Haslingden can probably thank the vandals for the loss of their service as this box will definitely be removed.

In an attempt to improve safety, parts of Grane Road will be closed between the 7th and 14th July and the 21st to 28th August, although there still seems to be some confusion over these dates. The closure will particularly affect the length from Calf Hey Road to the borough boundary.

The Community Action in Rossendale Video Unit is based at the Mary Hindle Centre in Bury Road, Haslingden. The unit run by Paul Lydiate trains young people in camera and video editing techniques so they can produce their own films.

The Trout in the Town Project: With a dreadful forecast again for the weekend of the river work; (there must be something tied to river clean up's where the rain gods descend on us): A decision was taken to press on with the River Clean Up at Greenfields, and am I am elated that we decided to crack on as the rain left us alone, we just had the strong winds to work against.
