ROAD users are being warned about potentially dangerous driving conditions due to high winds.

The Met Office has issued a weather warning for the North West after forecasting strong gales of between 60 and 65mph.

Yesterday the A66 trans-Pennine route, linking the M6 at Penrith to the A1 in County Durham, was shut to high-sided vehicles.

A spokesman for the Highways Agency said: “Drivers of high-sided vehicles and other vulnerable vehicles such as caravans and motorcycles are being urged to avoid using exposed sections of motorways and other routes across the affected areas.

“Drivers are advised to plan their journeys before they set out and to delay their journey if the weather becomes severe.”
