Two teenagers were killed and two other people injured when a car crashed down a motorway embankment, police have said.
A 14-year-old girl and a woman aged 18 died when the Vauxhall Astra convertible they were passengers in left the M1 near Lutterworth, Leicestershire, last night.
The driver of the car, a woman aged 35, and an 18-year-old man both escaped with minor injuries after it struck trees on the embankment.
The northbound M1 was closed until the early hours following the single-vehicle crash to allow investigators to examine the scene.
Detective Constable Adrian Keeble, who is appealing for witnesses, said: "The car had gone about a mile past the start of the M6 - Junction 19 (of the M1) - and was travelling northbound yesterday evening when it left the carriageway and collided with trees on the embankment at the side of the motorway.
"We'd like to appeal to anyone who was driving on the M1 in this area yesterday evening between 7pm and 7.15pm to contact us.
"The car was a black Vauxhall Astra but it was quite distinctive because it was a convertible so we'd like to hear from anyone who thinks they saw it."
Anyone with any information which could assist the inquiry is asked to contact Leicestershire Police on 101.
