Mulligan sets sights on film gong

Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan could add to her awards success with a London Evening Standard British Film gong.

Carey, who is up for best actress awards at this year's film Baftas and Oscars, for An Education, is in the running for the same prize at the Evening Standard awards.

The actress, who is not expected to attend the event, will compete against Anne-Marie Duff, who is shortlisted for playing John Lennon's mother in the biopic Nowhere Boy, and Kelly Macdonald, who plays a lonely fugitive in Michael Keaton's directorial debut The Merry Gentleman.

Andy Serkis, who is also nominated for a Bafta, is up for best actor at the Evening Standard Awards for the Ian Dury biopic Sex And Drugs And Rock And Roll.

He will compete against Tom Hardy for Bronson, Christian McKay for Me And Orson Welles and Alex MacQueen for The Hide.

Three of Britain's biggest comedy names, Sacha Baron Cohen (Bruno), Ricky Gervais (The Invention Of Lying) and Peter Capaldi (In The Loop), will compete for the Peter Sellers award for comedy.

Competing for the best film trophy are Jane Campion's Bright Star, Helen, the story of a young woman's disappearance, and Cannes' jury prize winner Fish Tank.

Fish Tank has also given its star, first-time actress Katie Jarvis, a place on the shortlist for most promising newcomer.

Katie, who was discovered on a station platform arguing with her boyfriend, will battle Duncan Jones for his direction of sci-fi drama Moon, and Peter Strickland, for his direction and screenplay of Katalin Varga.

Best screenplay will be fought out between Armando Iannucci's writing team for political satire In The Loop, Nick Hornby for An Education, and Paul Laverty for Looking For Eric.
