Harrison Ford has been offered the chance to reprise his Blade Runner role in the planned sequel - via a public announcement.

Producers Alcon Entertainment have taken the unusual step of making a public appeal to the veteran star to reprise his role as Rick Deckard from the 1982 sci-fi thriller, with original director Ridley Scott at the helm.

Hampton Fancher, co-writer of the original film, and Green Lantern's Michael Green have written the script.

"We believe that Hampton Fancher and Michael Green have crafted with Ridley Scott an extraordinary sequel to one of the greatest films of all time," said Alcon toppers Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson. "We would be honoured, and we are hopeful, that Harrison will be part of our project."

Harrison, 71, who recently signed up to reprise his role as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode VII, admitted in an interview last month he was interested in revisiting his Blade Runner character.

He said during a Q&A session on Reddit: "I'm quite curious and excited about seeing a new script for Blade Runner if in fact the opportunity would exist to do another, if it's a good script I would be very anxious to work with Ridley Scott again, he's a very talented and passionate filmmaker.

"And I think it would be very interesting to revisit the character."

Fancher and David Peoples adapted iconic film Blade Runner from Philip K Dick's novel Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?

All that is known about the sequel is that it is set several decades after the conclusion of the original - which took place in a dystopian 2019 Los Angeles.

Rutger Hauer played the leader of a group of escaped "replicants" - genetically engineered robots used for work on Earth's off-world colonies - who are hiding out in Los Angeles. Rick Deckard was a "blade runner", a police officer who kills replicants.

Alcon acquired the film, TV and ancillary franchise rights to produce prequels and sequels to Blade Runner in 2011. Scott committed to direct the sequel in August 2011 and Green came on board to work with Fancher a year ago.
