Kathryn Bigelow has said that winning a New York award is an "honour".

The Oscar-winning filmmaker, who was the first woman to win best director at the Academy Awards for 2010's The Hurt Locker, said winning the best director gong at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards for her new film Zero Dark Thirty is an achievement, reported USA Today.

"It's one of the highest honours I can imagine," she said on stage when she received her award.

She also admitted that she still isn't used to the glamorous side of the film industry.

"I used to get really nervous. I'm really shy. The last time I did the circuit, it beat it out of me," she said.

The winners were announced in December, with Zero Dark Thirty also winning best picture. Daniel Day-Lewis earned best actor honours for playing US President Abraham Lincoln in Steven Spielberg's Lincoln, while screen spouse Sally Field won best supporting actress.

"I don't read reviews. The fact that I've won this award twice in my life so far, I thank you so much. Even though I didn't read your reviews," Sally admitted in her speech.

Rachel Weisz, who stole best actress for her role in The Deep Blue Sea, attended with husband Daniel Craig and revealed that she's looking forward to the Golden Globes.

"I'm not going to win. It's relaxing. I can go and have a really good time," she said.

Matthew McConaughey - who has welcomed his third child Livingston with wife Camila Alves - received the best supporting actor gong for the comedies Bernie and Magic Mike and joked on stage: "It feels good."
