Rampling couldn't say no to The Sea

Lancashire Telegraph: Charlotte Rampling will star in The Sea Charlotte Rampling will star in The Sea

Charlotte Rampling has said she couldn't turn down a role in the upcoming adaptation of John Banville's The Sea.

The Booker prize-winning novel is being turned into a film by director Stephen Brown, with a screenplay by the author and a cast including Charlotte, Rufus Sewell, Bonnie Wright and Ciaran Hinds.

"The book is really moody and poetic and evocative and soulful, and John Banville adapted the screenplay so it's still his same writing and it has the same feel, so it's the most beautiful piece and I said yes right away," Charlotte said.

The actress, who has starred in acclaimed films such as The Night Porter and Swimming Pool, said she picks roles with which she has "a soul connection".

"It's got to be like something that is calling me. The story that I'm reading, there has to be a story within me. There has to be a concordance and a music that goes on. And it's got to be quite difficult and quite edgy and something that will bring me out of myself," she explained.

"To make people emerge, to get a performance out of somebody you've got to squeeze them quite tight, so that they don't do everything they do every time. I like to feel I can go in uncharted territories, which is not probably true but I like to think I can, so a subject will appeal to me if it's going into uncharted waters."
