Kristan Bromley sits 10th after the opening run of the men's skeleton run - just over three tenths of a second off bronze.
The Rossendale slider posted a faster time than he did in any of the training sessions in Sochi and sits one place behind fellow Brit Dominc Parsons.
Bromley, 41, has his second run later this afternoon before concluding the event with two runs tomorrow.
