Dennis Taylor replays 1985 World Championship Final

TRIUMPH: Dennis Taylor celebrates his win over Steve Davis in the ‘rematch’ TRIUMPH: Dennis Taylor celebrates his win over Steve Davis in the ‘rematch’

DENNIS Taylor replayed the final frame of his classic 1985 World Championship final with Steve Davis yesterday - 25 years to the day since the East Lancashire snooker star's dramatic win.

Taylor strode out at the Crucible, Sheffield, with over-sized glasses, while Steve Davis emerged with a ginger wig for the light-hearted re-run of the most famous frame in the history of snooker.

Inevitably, Taylor, who lived in the Blackburn area for years, again took the match to the wire, with the scoreline 38-37 in his favour after Davis potted the pink.

The rules were discarded as the players began picking up the ball and moving it around the table to replay the shots of 1985.

Taylor, suffering none of the nerves he displayed in the nail-biting original match, potted the black three times prematurely.

But then he missed recreating the shot into the top corner which won him his world title, instead firing it into the middle pocket.

And then he proceeded to brandish his cue above his head, and wave his finger in celebration, just like he did in the heyday of the game 25 years ago, when he kept 18.5million viewers on the edge of their seats.

After the black went down this time, Taylor, who lived in Beardwood and Mellor, said of the final: “I just never get tired of people talking about it.

“It’s something I’ll never forget for the rest of my life.”
