A depleted Blackburn side travelled to Cumbria with no fewer than six changes from the side selected in midweek.

But a patched up Burn started well and, in particular, looked strong in defence right across the park.

However, Blackburn’s defences were breached following a well-worked try in the 20th minute by the home side.

Blackburn had their chances to respond but errors in contact and a set piece, disrupted by personnel changes, meant they were unable to turn possession and territory into points.

Workington then scored an converted try to lead 12-0 before Blackburn captain Paul Bleasdale stole a back at the back of the host’s scrum to run in a try of their own.

Buoyed by the try, Blackburn went on the attack and create multiple chances only for the errors to creep in at the last moment - although Workington’s solid defence had something to do with it.

And two long range penalties made sure it was Workington who sealed the points and a 18-5 victory.

Blackburn will be looking to get back to winning ways when they host Aspatria on Saturday.

l Blackburn Thirds moved to the top of their division with a hard fought 8-5 win at Birkenhead Park.

They face rivals Rossendale on Sunday (2pm ko).
