AN amateur rugby league player faces a crown court trial after being accused of headbutting an opposition player during a game.
David Gareth Yii has been charged with wounding after an alleged incident during the Warrington Wizards v East Lancashire Lions match at Darwen Football Club on July 26.
Yii, 21, of Lyster Close, Birchwood, Warrington, pleaded not guilty to wounding John McMullen causing him grievous bodily harm when he appeared before Blackburn magistrates.
Mr McMullen was playing for East Lancashire Lions.
It was alleged there was a verbal altercation and Wizards player Yii then headbutted Mr McMullen.
The magistrates ordered the trial to be held at Preston Crown Court and Yii was bailed pending committal.
Warrington Wizards won the match 70-20. The teams play in the Conference National League.
East Lancashire Lions were formed in 2006 and are based at Darwen’s Anchor Ground.
They finished bottom in 2008 after winning just two of their 18 matches, but bosses have high hopes for the future.
Chairman Kevin Henry believes the club can reach National League Two – the third tier of British Rugby League – by 2011.
