TOM Hamer set a new world record as he won gold in the S14 200m freestyle at the Commonwealth Games.

The 19-year-old from Rawtenstall secured his first major title after holding off Australian rival, Liam Schluter, to touch home in 1 minute 55.88 seconds on the Gold Coast.

Hamer, who won two silver medals at the Paralympics in Rio in 2016, opened up a commanding lead before tiring in the closing stages.

But he held on to beat Schluter and Aussie teammate Daniel Fox to go one better than the silver medal he won at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games four years ago.
