RAMSBOTTOM United boss Mark Fell wants his side's stunning FA Trophy upset against Shaw Lane to be the benchmark for the club moving forward.

The Rams beat their high-flying opponents 4-1 in a replay on Tuesday night after three extra time goals booked them a second round qualifying trip to Altrincham on Saturday week.

Fell's side had come desperately close to beating Shaw Lane at the first time of asking only to be denied by a controversial last minute penalty.

But they made sure of the job at the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium when they came from behind to knock out a side who are second in the Evo-Stik Premier - a division above the Rams - and who have an FA Cup first round tie with Mansfield on Saturday.

"It was brilliant," said Fell of the midweek success.

"We thought Shaw Lane might rest a few players because of the cup tie but they were at full strength.

"We wanted to get an early goal and although that didn't materialise we took our chance when it came and the goals we scored in extra time were unbelievable.

"I think we out-desired them and maybe some of them were thinking about being on TV on Saturday but we wanted it that bit more and it was a great performance."

It doesn't get any easier in round two with Fell's side travelling to an Altrincham outfit who are top of the Premier Division - three points clear of Shaw Lane.

"It is a free hit for us," said Fell. "It'll be a good crowd and one the players can enjoy playing in front of.

"They knocked Clitheroe out in the last round but they ran them close and if we play like we did on Tuesday night then we will run them close."

Fell's men are back in league action this weekend when they travel to a Scarborough Athletic side who are six places and six points above the 10th placed Rams.

And with the Rams currently winless on the road in the league - with just two points from a possible 18 - it represents a tough looking fixture.

But Fell is buoyant and insists his side will get it right on the road.

"On our day we can beat anyone," he said.

"Our worst eneemy is us, we have pushed the self destruct button a couple of times.

"But I don't think we have a problem away from home, we have been really poor in tow of our games but other than that we have been playing well and just picking up the wins.

"We have changed our system a little bit to go back to front more quickly, that is not to say we are being direct and playing a long ball, but on occasions we were trying to play out from the back a bit too much and sometimes on pitches at our level that can be your downfall.

"Scarborough is a big game for us but we want to be in the mix for the play-offs and we have shown how good a side we can be so it is a game to look forward to."

Elsewhere tomorrow Colne host Kendal Town while Clitheroe entertain Ossett Town.

Simon Haworth's Blues are down in 14th but a victory would potentially lift them into the top half.

Colne have climbed to 19th after a resurgence in recent weeks after two wins in three league games and the Reds will be looking to bounce back from a 2-0 reverse at Scarborough last time out.
