NELSON professional Devon Conway smashed an incredible 231 not out off just 146 balls to guide his side to a 149-run Worsley Cup victory over Rishton.

Conway’s double century included 11 sixes and 19 fours as Nelson posted 354-4.

That proved more than enough despite Rishton pro Qasier Abbas making 92 as they were restricted to 205-7 in their 50 overs.

Conway’s total surpasses the Lancashire League record of 211 not out that Kelly Smuts made for Todmorden last month.

Burnley’s cup reign is over after the defending champions were beaten by Accrington on Sunday.

The Turf Moor men were aiming for a fifth straight success in the competition having made history by becoming the first team to win four successive Worsley Cups last season but they fell at the first hurdle at Thorneyholme Road.

Accrington posted 155-7 off their 50 overs with Jacob Clarke’s unbeaten 53 helping them recover from 21-3.

Burnley got off to a terrible start in reply with only professional Chris Holt reaching double figures of the top order batsman.

His 53 gave the visitors hope of chasing down their target having at one stage been in dire trouble at 28-5 but when Holt fell as the seventh man out it was curtains for Burnley despite Jehangir Liaqat’s unbeaten 30.

Both sides made 220 from their 50 overs but it was the visitors who progressed thanks to losing one fewer wicket.

Elsewhere, Darwen won the battle of the newcomers as they claimed a seven wicket win at Clitheroe.

Opener Ammer Mirza hit an unbeaten 105 at the top of the order and Mark Friend added 54 not out as the visitors chased down Clitheroe’s 212-8. Jack Dewhurst top scored for the home side with 56.

East Lancashire’s fine start to the season continued as they beat Lowerhouse by 26 runs.

Andries Gous smashed 129 off 103 balls as East Lancs posted 271 all out from 50 overs and it proved just enough as Lowerhouse fell short despite 82 from professional Ockert Erasmus.

Todmorden secured a quarter-final place with an eight wicket win over Great Harwood. Andrew Sutcliffe hit 42 and Ben Pearson 41 as Tod raced to their target of 117 inside 25 overs. Paul Houldsworth top scored for the home side with 47.

Ramsbottom beat Bacup by 45 runs while Colne won a thriller at Haslingden by one wicket.
