CLITHEROE'S Jon Schofield has been named in a six-strong canoe sprint team for this summer's Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Liam Heath and Schofield will bid for a second Olympic medal after claiming bronze in the K2 200m in London four years ago.

Former world medallist Rachel Cawthorn, who finished fifth in London, will race in both the K1 500m and as part of the women's K4 500m team alongside Louisa Gurski, Rebeka Simon and Jess Walker.

But there is no place for London 2012 gold medallist Ed McKeever, who failed to take his final chance to qualify in Duisberg last month.

Team GB Chef de Mission Mark England said: "The majority of the athletes come with solid Olympic experience and many have also competed as part of Team GB in the last 12 months having been part of the European Games in Baku.

"No doubt that wealth of experience will stand the team in good stead at the Olympics in Rio as they once again pit themselves against the best in the world."
