LAURA Massaro hailed her US Open victory as ‘extra special’ after a comeback victory over Nour El Tayeb in Philadelphia.

The 31-year-old from Chorley once again demonstrated her fighting qualities to win 11-6, 9-11, 6-11, 11-8, 11-7 in an absorbing contest that lasted 67 minutes.

It is the second time the British number one has won the US Open and follows up her victory in the Macau Open in September.

But once again she had to fight for her win.

Despite taking the opening game, her young Egyptian rival recovered to take the lead.

But Massaro, showing more of the never-say-die attitude that got her to the final - including a 3-2 victory over Nicol David in the quarter final having trailed 2-0 - fought back and quickened the pace of the game.

Although El Tayeb threw herself across the court with some spectacular retrieving, the 22-year-old couldn’t stop Massaro from fighting to victory and winning another PSA World Series Championship.

Massaro, who lives in Hoghton, said she wants to remembered for more than just being the ‘comeback queen’ but was delighted with the victory.

“Winning this title feels extra special to me because of the break that I had earlier this year and going 18 months without a title before winning in Macau a few weeks ago,” said Massaro, who is back up to number three in the world rankings.

“I want to be known for so much more than my comebacks but I just keep doing it!

“I have a deep inner belief that I can come back from any position and I keep trying as hard as I can and somehow it keeps working.

“To now win two tournaments in a month, and a major title such as the US Open, means a lot and I’m really proud with myself because I worked really hard this summer and it’s incredibly pleasing to see that pay off.”

Massaro took time out of the game last season and even considering walking away from the sport altogether. But she has rediscovered her form and her love of the game.

“After having a bit of a break due to feeling a burnt out, I’m as keen as mustard again” added Massaro.

“I want to thank my husband Danny, coach David Pearson and everyone back home, who have helped me to achieve this result.

“It’s a great feeling.”
