LAURA Massaro will bid for a quarter-final place in the US Open when she takes on Amanda Sobhy in the last 16.

The Hoghton star, seeded five for the tournament, overcame Egypt’s Heba El Torky in round one on Sunday and is looking forward to taking on American number one Sobhy in front of a US crowd.

“I feel pretty good and it’s always good to get off to a good start in these big tournaments especially when you’re coming onto a glass court for the first time in a little while,” said Massaro.

“I feel happy with how I finished the match. I’m excited to play Amanda in the next round. She’s playing well but I’ll go away and focus on how I’m going to approach it and hopefully I’ll play well.”

Massaro took just 30 minutes to overcame the challenge of El Torky as she secured an 11-6, 11-8, 11-5 victory to move through.

The East Lancashire star, who has climbed back up to number three in the world following a victory in the Macau Open in China earlier this season, is on course for a mouthwatering clash with Malaysian star Nicol David in the quarter finals should the second seed get the better of Nouran Gohar in her last 16 match tomorrow.

Massaro, 31, is due on court at 4.30pm local time in Philadelphia – immediately after David’s match.
