EAST Lancashire pair Holly Bradshaw and Sophie Hitchon have been named in the Great Britain squad for this summer’s World Championships in China but there is no place for Alison Leonard.

Blackburn Harrier pole vaulter Bradshaw and her club mate Hitchon both enjoyed success at the British trials and were certain of their spots prior to the selection announcement yesterday.

Leonard, who finished third in the British trials with only the top two guaranteed a berth, missed out after the selectors opting to choose Jenny Meadows to run alongside Shelayna Oskan-Clarke and Lynsey Sharp.

Leonard, 25, competed for Great Britain in last year’s European Championships in Zurich but has been overlooked despite finishing ahead of Meadows in the trials in Birmingham.

For Bradshaw, 23, and Hitchon, 24, it will be a first appearance in a senior world championship although both competed in the London 2012 Olympics. The pair will be joined by Jessica Ennis-Hill will compete in her first major championship since London 2012 after deciding to go to Beijing next month.

The Sheffield athlete is joined in the heptathlon by Katarina Johnson-Thompson, who has also been selected in the long jump.

Mo Farah will defend his 5,000m and 10,000m titles after a difficult season which has seen his coach Alberto Salazar engulfed by doping allegations,.

Adam Gemili, who has not raced since suffering a hamstring injury in early June, has been named in the 4x100m team.

Dina Asher-Smith, who became the first British woman to run the 100m in under 11 seconds when she clocked 10.99secs on Saturday, will race over 200m in Beijing.

Richard Kilty has been handed the third and final spot in the men’s 100m alongside Chijindu Ujah and James Dasaolu.

The championships run from August 22 to 30.
