TWO up-and-coming runners from East Lancashire clubs powered to the top of the podium in the Mid Lancs Cross County League race at Towneley Park in Burnley on Saturday.

Clayton-le-Moors Harriers’ Jackson McKay was the winner of the under 11s boys race in six minutes and 54 seconds with Hyndburn AC’s Henry Harbord hot on his heels in third in 7mins 7secs.

Pendle AC’s Kai Atkins replicated McKay’s success by racing to glory in the U15s boys race in 13mins 17secs.

Rossendale Harriers, thanks to Joshua Whitehead (seventh), Ethan Radcliffe (14th) and Matthew Toman (15th), took the U15s boys team title, with Clayton-le-Moors Harriers second and Pendle AC third.

Charlotte Corrigan, of Hyndburn AC, was the area’s highest finisher in the U11s girls race, passing the post in fourth in 7mins 53secs.

That position was bettered by Briony Holt in the U13s girls race as she crossed the line in 9mins 56secs for second place.

Holt’s performance, aligned with those of Eleanor Root (fifth) and Liberty Thompson (ninth), ensured Clayton-le-Moors Harriers claimed the U13s girls team crown.

Matthew Mackay came second in the U13s boys race, the Rossendale Harrier clocking 10mins 53secs.

Blackburn Harriers were the winners of the U15s girls team title after Megan Clarkson finished fifth, Maddie Elliot seventh and Hannah Cookson eighth. Clubmate Natalya Irvine was one place behind in ninth.

Pendle AC duo Matthew Barnes and James Marchant finished second and third respectively in the U17s men’s race in 18mins 59secs and 19mins 5secs.

And, with Thomas Marchant following up in seventh, that was enough for Pendle AC to win the U17s men’s team prize. Emma Guilfoyle, of Hyndburn AC, was sixth in the U17s ladies race in 16mins 40secs, while her clubmate Ellen Sagar-Hesketh was third in the U20s ladies race in 23mins 31secs.
