LAURA Massaro has finally helped England win the Women’s World Team Championship and said it was all down to team spirit.

It was the seventh time England have won the crown but the first time that Chorley ace Massaro has lifted the title in 10 attempts.

The world number two captained England to glory after they beat Nicol David’s Malaysia in the final in Canada.

Massaro lost 3-0 to David in her match, going down 11-8, 11-9, 11-3 but victories for Sarah-Jane Perry and Alison Waters guided England to a dramatic victory.

“There’s been an unbelievable team spirit in the England camp this week,” said Massaro, who lives in Hoghton, “ I honestly believe that is what has made the difference.”

Despite being world number one and the undoubted star of women’s squash, it was the first time David and Malaysia had reached the final after knocking out top seeds Egypt in the semi finals.

England, seeded second, reached a record-breaking 11th straight final after beating Hong Kong in their semi final clash.

England’s quest of that elusive seventh title began in convincing style when squad number three, Sarah-Jane Perry, beat Malaysian Delia Arnold 11-8, 11-9, 11-7.

Next on the all-glass showcourt were the two teams’ top-strings - world number one David against world number two Massaro for the 30th time since 2005.

But the Malaysian was in dominant form and extended her 10-year unbeaten record in the event to beat Massaro in 44 minutes.

So it was all down to the decider between Waters and Low Wee Wern. Waters took the first two games and led 8-6 in the third. But Wee Wern pulled a game back before Waters regained her composure to win the fourth and seal an 11-8, 11-7, 8-11, 11-4 victory in 69 minutes.
