GEORGE Woodburn is still going strong for Blackburn Harriers.

Since joining the club half a century ago, on March 12, 1964, he has competed for it in every single one of those 50 years.

On Friday night, at the Harriers’ annual presentation awards evening, that phenomenal achievement was recognised when he was honoured with a special award given out by the club’s committee.

George’s road racing record includes personal bests of 30 minutes at 10k, 50 minutes for 10 miles, 67 minutes for the half-marathon, and two hours and 26 minutes for the marathon.

His latest race came on Sunday when he contested the 143-strong Chorley Fire 10k with two other Harriers members.

Heading home the trio was Samantha McCreadie who finished 13th overall in 39mins 59secs, making her the second fastest female.

Next in with a PB was Kaylie Panaro who passed the post in 45mins 51secs for 41st overall.

Following up in 48th was George in 46mins 59secs, a time good enough to earn him the MV60 prize.

Samantha said: “This was the first Chorley Fire 10k – it was a two-lap course and a decent route, fairly fast with only one real hill.

“Unfortunately no PB for me but still pleased to get sub 40.

“Well done to Kaylie on her PB and great to see George racing again and picking up another prize.”

Two Trawden AC members made the top 20.

Fraser Snape was 15th in 40mins 50secs and Chris Stanley 17th in 40mins 58secs.

Lee Childs led the way for Chorley Athletic and Triathlon Club, finishing 38th in 45mins 43secs.

Howard Ashworth was first home for Accrington Road Runners in 53rd in 47mins 52secs.

James Hilton, of Wigan Phoenix, raced to victory in 33mins 48secs.
