Clitheroe duo continue title challenge in Wales
10:05am Thursday 5th July 2012 in Motor sport
By Chris Flanagan, Sports reporter
CLITHEROE Motor Club duo Steve Quigley and Terry Martin continue their quest to win the SD34 Stage Rally Championship this weekend as they travel to the JRT Enville Stages Rally in Anglesey.
The rally takes place on Sunday and consists of 10 special stages totalling 50 miles of rallying across tarmac and concrete stages. Stage one will begin at 9.30am with the final stage finishing at around 4.15pm.
Despite snapping the gearbox input shaft in their last rally, the pink Renault Clio is fit to race after weeks of repairs and the pair hope to emulate their recent successes, which saw them finish third in the Lee Holland Rally and second in the Cetus Stages Rally.
Co-driver Martin was also in action alongside James Taylor at Garstang and Preston Motor Club’s Memorial Road Rally, taking 20th place.
He teams up again with Quigley this weekend and the duo are aiming for a top 10 finish with the possibility of sneaking into the top five, depending on how the new gearbox holds up.
It has been a successful year so far for the Clitheroe duo, performing above all expectations as they lead the SD34 and ANCC Stage Rally Championships with just four meetings to go in each.
Despite tough opposition the pair are hoping to remain in pole position at the end of the rally season.
In September Quigley and Martin are hoping to be racing a new car.
The pair are preparing a newer Renault Clio, which they hope will boost their chances of winning more silverware in the coming years.
Blackburn’s John Stone is also scheduled to compete in the Enville Stages alongside co-driver Jack Morton in his Skoda Fabia WRC.
