A MOTOR rally competitor is helping raise funds for charity while introducing absolute beginners to the sport.
Steve Johnson, at Accrington Motor Sports Club, is offering two lucky winners over the age of 14 a free rally event drive in return for supporting the North West Stages, one of the country’s busiest stage rallies.
The event has raised £85,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care in it’s 12 years, but organisers are worried that the tough financial climate will affect the event in Blackpool next month.
Steve is offering two sponsors who donate £25 or more be featured in special ‘arrive and drive’ rally events taking place later this year. The prize will see the winner drive around obstacles at events in their own car or a rally vehicle provided by AMSC.
Steve, a founder member of Formula 1000 Rally Club and The Under 17 Motor Club, also promotes Safety in Motorsport by running events where 14-year-old club members and members of the public were able to drive a rally car for the first time.
The Civil Service Motoring Association committee member said he hoped to raise a record amount for charity by making the initiative part of the North West Stages.
He said: “Times are really hard and trying to persuade people to sponsor us as a crew was looking difficult.
“By getting people more involved and allowing people to take part in motor sports, perhaps for the first time, it should generate more fundraising.
“The winners would be able to drive their own car, or I’ll provide one. Even if the winner is too young to have a licence, we will get them a dual control car and instructor so they can participate”.
Supporters donating £25 to the charity by sponsoring the Accrington crew will be entered into a free draw. The winner will receive an arrive and drive at an AutoSolo or Production Car Autotest on Sunday April 29 or Sunday June 24 at the CSMA Lymm Truck Stop event. The top donation made of over £50 will also receive the same prize.
