Three East Lancs crews compete for Ryemoor Trophy

ROUND two of the SD34 Road Rally Championship saw three East Lancashire crews entered for the Ryemoor Trophy, organised by Malton Motor Club in North Yorkshire.

Padiham's Alan Douglas only finished putting a new 1600cc engine in his Vauxhall Corsa just hours before the event was due to start.

Without a chance to run it in, Douglas elected not to risk the motor and decided not to start.

Reigning SD34 champions Terry Martin, from Blackburn, and Paul Taylor had to be content with 12th overall after incurring a five-minute penalty for missing a code board - for the second time in two events.

"I should have gone to Specsavers instead of spending my money on the car!," joked Martin afterwards.

Paul Buckel and Steve Butler, from Accrington, picked up a fail after missing a route check in Catterick, costing them a possible top 15 place.

However, their 26th place was enough for Butler to take the lead of the SD34 navigators championship.

Organisers Malton Motor Club laid on a well-recieved route of 160 miles, including 10 miles of whites, on OS map 99 - used for the first time in five years - and map 100.

Crews tackled the infamous Caydale Mill ford, which spectators hadn't dammed for once, Kepwick white, which was last used on the 1987 Costa Plenti rally, Catterick Garrison and Brimham Rocks.

Winners were Steve Retchless and Tullie, with Ade Green and Kevin Wilson taking second ahead of Guy Robinson and Charles Wheeldon.

The next round is the VK Derbyshire Rally on March 27-28.
