Stone revels in Jim Clark showpiece

METRO man John Stone opened his MSA Asphalt Championship account in fine style with an excellent sixth place on the Jim Clark National Rally.

The Blackburn businessman has been plagued with transmission problems on his 6R4 this season, but it all came good on the Borders event to record his best result of the year.

Less fortunate were two other East Lancashire-based crews.

Daniel Harper and Chris Campbell go their Mini Sport of Padiham BMW Cooper S up as high as ninth before mechanical problems forced their retirement on stage 11, Leitholm 1.

Husband-and-wife pairing of John and Paula Swinscoe lasted just two stages in their Mitsubishi Evo, although Paula then went out on the Reivers Rally the following day alongside John Wood, finishing 59th overall.

Overall victory in the Jim Clark National went to Melvyn Evans/Sean Mullally (Subaru Impreza S11) with Irishman Eugene Donnelly and Paddy Toner winning the International in thier Skoda Fabia.
