BLACKBURN Hawks came from behind to thrash Coventry Blaze 9-3 at the Arena on Sunday night.
Hawks trailed 3-1 at the first interval and were level at the end of the second, but produced an outstanding final period of ice hockey to secure the points.
Coventry raced into a two-goal lead, bundling the puck over the line on four minutes, before finally breaking through the Hawks defence for goal number two.
Hawks pulled one back through Sam Dunford, but a series of penalties allowed the Blaze to restore their two-goal cushion when a speculative shot beat the unsighted Danny Brittle.
It took until the halfway point in the match before Hawks reduced the deficit again, when a period of intense pressure saw several deflections fall kindly for Ric Hughes, who fired home.
Aaron Davies then levelled the scores as the balance of power began to shift.
The third period saw Hawks move into overdrive, as they put a rapidly tiring Coventry outfit to the sword, scoring six more unanswered goals.
Jordan Bannon scored the first with only two minutes gone, before Gary Dixon found himself all alone on the red line, as Hawks killed off a powerplay.
It was now wave after wave of attack, with Brian Worrall smashing a shot against the post, before Hughes grabbed his second.
Coventry changed their netminder, but the replacement faired little better. Two goals within a minute, from Tom King and Jared Owen, put the result beyond doubt before Dunford completed the rout.
Head coach Owen said: “The guys worked hard all evening. This performance sets us up well for the forthcoming matches.”
