BLACKBURN Hawks could put the final piece in their 2014-15 season jigsaw this weekend, but outgoing player-coach Jared Owen insists they are not looking beyond this afternoon’s play-off semi-final.

Hawks are favourites to reach tomorrow’s final, and win the play-offs, after going through the entire campaign unbeaten and lifting the first league title of their 25-year history.

But Owen, whose fifth season with the club will be his last, said preparations have focused only on Sheffield Spartans, who they take on in the first semi-final of the play-offs weekend in Dumfries this afternoon (face-off 1pm).

“Our ethos has been the same all season, one game at a time," he said.

“We’re not looking too far ahead because anything can happen.

“I think it will be a tough game because they are the form team.

“Yes, we’ve not lost a game in the league season, but they’ve picked up form at the right time. They cam from nowhere to pick up that fourth place so they have momentum.

“They ran us close this season so they will go into the game with confidence.

“We’ve got to make sure we are firing on all cylinders and do the things were good at, and not get caught up in the way they want to play.”

He added: “We haven’t tried to plan for playing anyone else. We will worry about who we’d be playing next if and when that happens.

“We’ve made a bigger focus on the semi-final this year. We’ve trained to play Sheffield.”

Owen will have his last taste of competitive action this weekend, after announcing he will step down from his role at the end of the season.

But he admitted his impending exit was not at the forefront of his thoughts as Hawks go for the double in this all-or-nothing weekend.

“It’s just about the game for me at the moment,” he said.

“I don’t think any of it will sink in until it’s all over.”

Hawks, who boast a full squad, would face the winners of the second versus third meeting between Billingham Stars and hosts Solway Sharks, which takes place straight after the first semi-final.

Hawks fans raised more than £1,300 in a collection, which was matched by a player’s relative, in order for the league champions to travel in style to Scotland.

They set off after last night’s hour-long training session.

“We are the early game this year so we wanted to get there at a decent time so that we could have a good sleep,” said Owen.
