SATURDAY’S 16-0 thrashing of Manchester Minotaurs proved to be a decent game for us to get back to basics and do the simple things well.

Having had to come back from behind to stay unbeaten in the previous weekend’s home game with Sheffield Spartans it was good to have such a conclusive scoreline and performance.

I feel a bit sorry for the Minotaurs sometimes. They don’t have a big squad and probably 70 per cent of the players are under 18s.

I guess you could call them a feeder club for Manchester Phoenix because as soon as anyone good comes through the ranks they get snapped up, so it must be hard for them to try to progress as a team.

But, as far as we are concerned, we had a job to do and you can only beat what’s in front of you.

We’ve only dropped points twice this season but on both occasions, rather than lick our wounds, it’s served as a timely kick up the backside and we’ve responded in the right way.

With the festivities getting in the way of training we’ve not really been at it, so we changed a few things around last Thursday and had a really good session to make sure we keep pushing.

It worked a treat. Luke Brittle scored four and Aaron Davies got a hat-trick;Adam Brittle, David Miekle and Rick Hughes scored two each while myself, Jared Owen and Matt Viney got one each.

We’ve got the Minotaurs again this Saturday, with the visit of Peterborough Phantoms in the cup completing a double-header weekend on the Sunday.

I’d expect much of the same against Manchester on Saturday, while EPL side Peterborough were beaten by Solway on Sunday, so that’s given us hope of doing the same, although I’m sure that result has made them more determined not to lose to us as well.

Beating an EPL team is what I’ve wanted to do this season to show how far we’ve come, and we have come close based on performance.

Peterborough beat us 7-1 at their place but that flattered them a bit. We were very much in the game, they just took their chances better.

The league’s our bread and butter but it would be nice if we could get that scalp.
