MATT Derbyshire will be fit and raring to go for the start of pre-season training after he underwent surgery yesterday.

The England Under 21 international, who was playing through the pain barrier during the final weeks of the season, has had an operation to repair a double hernia.

It is thought Derbyshire will be sidelined for a total of four weeks, but Rovers' medical staff are confident he will make a complete recovery in time to join in with the rest of the squad when they return for training in early July.

A member of the medical staff said: "The operation went well and we expect to see Matt back in training again in the next four weeks.

"He will come in for some rehabilitation work over the summer and should be ready to join in with the rest of the lads when they come back."

Derbyshire first began struggling with the injury in February but delayed surgery until the end of the season so he could play a part during the run-in.

In the meantime, Rovers will reveal who they plan to release early next week.

Several members of the first-team squad, including Tugay, Peter Enckelman, Stephane Henchoz and Bruno Berner, are out of contract this summer and Hughes is due to speak with all of them over the next few days, when he will outline his intentions.

Enckelman has already emerged as a target for Cardiff City, who are willing to tempt the Finn to Ninian Park with the offer of a three-year contract.

Berner and Henchoz, meanwhile, are almost certain to be released, having failed to play a significant part last term.

Hughes' biggest dilemma concerns Tugay, who turns 38 this summer but believes he can play on at Premier League for at least another year.

Tugay would like to stay on and help the youngsters.

Give him a years trial as a coach, keep his player registration for emergency mid field cover in case of injuries.
If he can impart half of his skill to add to the natural skill of our youngsters we could develop more academy players instead of having to spend so many millions bringing in 'oft ****-dens'. Most of the team that won the UEFA cup last night were young local lads, this year they have won the Russian league, a tough one, and beaten many of Europes top teams (they only slipped up against Everton, so did we) People say the academy is a success if a couple of players every other year make it through to the first team. I think it should be a much higher proportion than that , with a good coaching staff.
St. Petersburg have proved it can be done, give Tugay the job of examining the St. Petersburg model and putting it into practice as midfield coach of the club. Not just with the youngsters though, David Dunn could learn a lot from Tugay, but one of his problems is he probably wouldn't listen and go on playing his own selfish game. OOPS sorry, didn't mean to 'go off on one about Dunn then. But seriously if we could get a few million for selling Dunn, lets replace him-with one of Sparkys mid field transfer targets and bring in the other mid field target as well. Central mid field needs a good shake up to provide the through balls that have been missing this season. In the end we were lucky to finish 7th as our end of season form has not been as good as the start. Still with a few very big "IF's" we could be 5th next season.
1. Keep Bentley 2. MGP back on form. 3. A couple of inspired mid field signings. 4.Benni and Roque 20+goals each. MGP and Bentley 15 between them. Derbs or Jason 10 between them. Plus the odd goal from defenders. OH! thats 65 goals, with those and Friedel on form we could be Champions again. An impossible dream? First we need to forget about our performances at the end of the season and get back to the earlier form.

Laters all.
i've heard the same savio, that he would like to stay on and help the youngsters. he also said that the rovers were like his family and much he oved the fans.
lets just hope sparky does what souness did for him and offers him a coaching role.even ferguson didn't think sparky would make a good manager because he was so quiet and look how he's turned out.
potential rovers manager of the future?
you never know!

Hi all,

I have to say I don't think the Maestro could last another season but I have heard he would like a coaching role at the club and have already conveyed those thoughts to MH as like most people would admit his reading of the game and his knowledge would be a real asset to this club.

Laters all.

Like others, I'm torn on the whole Tugay thing. There is not doubting he is/has been a legend for this club and I wouldn't like to see that reputation tarnished by him playing on here for too long.

I think Hughes will be giving it very careful consideration and will make the decision that is the best for the club - even if that decision is a hard one, which will upset some of the fans. Remember - it was Hughes who called time on Tony Parkes' Ewood career not long after taking over, which angered/shocked a large number of fans at the time. But looking back now, I don't think we're any the worse for that decision, are we?

Trust in Sparky.

Get fit again as soon as possible Matt. We'll need you, fit and keen, next season. Be patient, your time will come and, if you keep working hard, your time will be BIG!
Patience is the key!

Have a good 'off season' and come back refreshed and fit again.

Several members of the first-team squad, including Tugay, Peter Enckelman, Stephane Henchoz and Bruno Berner,

i wouldnt bother renewing a contract with either of them, agree with Michael - yes even tugay, his time is over, he cant even run anymore and we'll see a few more stray passes from him if he stays on, what a legend tho.

This is a tough one to call....Hughes isnt a soft touch when it comes to making big decisions (like the savage saga). The question that needs to be answered is, can he play an active role in the first team next season? I think the answer is no.

Many bloggers have identified our lack of creative quality in midfield at the moment and therefore can we assume that this is the department that Hughes will look to bolster?

If as many have suggested a pay as you play contract or a coaching role is a happy conclusion for all parties then it would be great to have a fantastic servent to the club being part of the backroom staff.

But due to Tugay being a pro in the way he approaches the media (ie doesnt open his gob in public) we dont know if he wants to be at the club in a coaching capacity.

Im sure we wont have to wait too long for an answer but either way he is up there with the greats in the clubs history and for me deserves a testimonial should he not be strutting his stuff in 08/09!

Disagree!! As much as I love Tugay as a Rovers player think its time for him to go just so we can get him off the wage bill taking a guess that he is on about 20 grand a week which could go towards signing a younger player
Don't talk rubbish u clown - he took a pay drop two years ago to stay and he is on between 5 - 10k per week. Behave - 20 Grand!! Sign him up at a reduced wage - he'll take it!!
As I said I took a guess at 20 grand, never realised you worked for Rovers and new what the players earnt every week........chopstic

I think if we offer him 1 more season on a payed as he plays deal with terms like he is on now he would snap our hands off.

the guy loves football and loves playing.

but i dont think he would make a good coach. he does not like being centre of attention.

I am truly torn on this one..Michael makes a valid point but if we could get Tugay down at rovers as a coach and a pay-as-you-play deal then keep him..
