Orphanage Cup will go ahead

THIS season’s Orphanage Cup competition will go ahead.

Organisers were concerned that they may have to cancel it due to the current financial climate.

The competition, which is for works teams from in and around the Blackburn area, has been running since 1951.

While numbers are down on previous years, more than 20 teams have entered this season’s competition which is expected to kick off in late March, early April.

“I have been very happy with the response from local companies who have shown their support,” said Orphanage Cup secretary Tom Tatham. “There were a number of issues which meant we were worried that we may have to cancel but this is great news.”

Tatham said there were other concerns including looking for a new sponsor plus his own health problems, having just come out of hospital after a major operation.

He added: “We had a number of reasons to be worried about from the current financial situation.

“We lost our sponsors which is a major thing for us and I have just come out of hospital after having my knee replaced. It means I have not been unable to do all the running around.

“But teams have either phoned or emailed to say they want to play and I am delighted it is going ahead.”

And there is still time for teams to enter who have until Friday to express an interest.
