A BLACKBURN chess club have been honoured for the work it does in coaching and introducing youngsters to the game.
Knights United Chess Club were presented with an engraved chess set and digital clock by the British Chess Educational Trust for the work it has done in coaching juniors players.
The club, based at Old Blackburnians Football Club on Lammack Road have coached players to a standard where they can compete on even terms with other competitive players.
The juniors, some still at primary school, compete in two local leagues mainly against adults.
The older players at the club are delighted to see such youngsters coming up through the ranks — but still try their best not to be ‘embarrassed’ by a player many years younger than themselves! Needless to stay, quite a few adults have been ‘embarrassed’ already this season.
The club encourages juniors to play competitively as part of the coaching and gain valuable experience in congresses and other tournaments.
Many go on to represent Lancashire at various junior levels, while some even represent the county at senior level while still attending school.
Three Knights recently represented England and did themselves and the club proud with their performances.
