ALFIE Briggs has been crowned overall St Bede’s biathlon champion and has been awarded the Adam Rogers Memorial Trophy.

The competition was held in October but the winners were only revealed at a recent special assembly held at the Blackburn school.

The annual event is held in memory of former pupil Adam Rogers who was tragically killed by a single punch while on a night out with friends in July 2009.

His family set up the Every Action has Consequences charity in his memory and Adam’s parents, Dave and Pat, attended the assembly where they received a cheque for £1015.81which was raised by pupils for the charity.

St Bede’s head of PE, Mark Ashworth, said: “This is a fantastic event and an important part of the St Bede’s sporting calendar. This is a test of effort, resilience and personal endeavour and it was great to see so many of our students volunteering to be involved.

“Whenever possible we will continue to support the Rogers Family and the important message they tirelessly campaign for.”

The pupils competed over distances based on age with the younger pupils running 800m before swimming for 50m.

The 13 and 14-year-old pupils ran for 1600m before swimming 100m while the 15 and 16-year-olds pupils run 1600m followed by a 200m swim with points awarded for the times set.

The highest point scorers will be invited to attend the Lancashire Biathlon Competition at Accrington Academy next year, and will have a chance to qualify for the National finals in London.

The results were:

n Year 7 Champions: Dylan Watson & Lucy Ramsden

n Year 8 Champions: Alfie Briggs & Kate Turner

n Year 9 Champions: Covy Smith & Millie Peel

n Year 10 Champions: Matthew Ramsden & Ruby Cain

n Overall Champion: Alfie Briggs

Sports Leaders from St Bede’s organise the time keeping and recording of the points score with the children.

The run took place on St Bede’s School site (as East Lancashire Cricket Ground was waterlogged) and the swim was at QEGS pool.

All pupils who competed in the event received a medal presented by Mr and Mrs Dave and Pat Rogers. Pupils attended a special assembly in November for “Adams trophy” to be presented by Mr and Mrs Rogers. This year we have made our Biathlon a Sponsored event and we were proud to present Pat and Dave Rogers from Every Action has consequences with a cheque for £1015.81!

Pat Rogers said: “The biathlon event was superb. It was brilliant to see so many young pupils taking part.

“For some of them, just going the distance was a real challenge and they showed great determination to complete it.

“It was a fantastic event in memory of Adam. Thanks so much to all the students who took part and the staff who organised it.

“Thank you also to all of the children for collecting the sponsorship money, the extra funds will help us to spread the message of EAHC in even more schools and colleges across the North West.”
