CLITHEROE Royal Grammar School were crowned overall champions at the Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Schools athletics championships.
The traditional end of school year event was held at Wilson’s Playing Fields, Clayton-le-Moors, where schools from across both boroughs battled it out on the track and field.
And the fight for top spot could not have been any tighter with CRGS finishing just four points ahead of St Augustine’s once all the totals had been totted up.
A total of 11 schools from across the two boroughs took part and also included Accrington Academy, Mount Carmel, Oakhill, Rhyddings, Ribblesdale, St Christopher’s, Norden, Bowland and Hollins, who were crowned Hyndburn champions and finished third in the overall standings.
On the track, pupils took part in the sprint events – 100m, 200m and 300m – the 800m and 1500m over middle distance, and the popular 4x100m relay.
And in the field they competed in shot, discus, javelin, long jump and triple jump.
CRGS and St Augustine’s went toe to toe for honours in the boys and girls events.
In the boys events, CRGS were the top team on the track, finishing ahead of St Augustine’s and Ribblesdale.
While in the field, it was St Augustines who were the tops, beating CRGS in to second place while St Christopher’s were third.
It was a similar story in the girls events – St Augustine’s pipping CRGS on the track before roles were reversed in the field with Hollins finishing in third place on each occasion.
CRGS won the boys overall prize with a total of 328 points with St Augustine’s second six points behind with 322 points while Hollins were third with 278 points.
In the girls event, it was was even tighter with St Augustine’s topping the table with 290 points just two ahead of CRGS. Hollins yet again finished in third place place with 253 points.
