ST LEONARD’S Langho have been crowned Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Year fie and six ‘B’ team football champions.

The competition was for players who had not represented their school in football but the super Saints showed they had plenty in reserve after they beat Peel Park 2-0 in the final.

Schools were split in to two groups with the top two from each progressing to the knockout stages. A total of 10 teams from across the two boroughs took part in the event that was held at Accrington Academy.

Group A was separated on goal difference as both St Mary’s Langho and Benjamin Hargreaves finished on 10 points. It was the Saints who topped the group on account of scoring six goals - one more than Benjamin Hargreaves. Green Haworth were third with with six points ahead of Peel Park B and Edisford.

Group B was topped by Peel Park A with 10 points ahead of St Leonard’s Langho who finished on nine points.

Third place went to Spring Hill with St Joseph’s Hurst Green fourth and St Mary’s Oswaldtwistle fifth.

In the first semi final, St Leonard’s Langho came out on top in their Ribble Valley ‘derby’ with St Mary’s Langho, winning 2-0 while the all-Hyndburn clash between Peel Park ‘A’ and Benjamin Hargreaves went to a penalty shootout which Peel Park won 5-4.

In the third and fourth place play-off, St Marys Langho came out on top with a 1-0 win over Benjamin Hargreaves.

And it was another success for Ribble Valley in the final as St Leonard’s Langho beat Peel Park 2-0.

Gareth Martindale, school games organiser, said: “It was fantastic to see new players playing football and getting the chance to represent their school. The football leagues run throughout the year and not one player playing had played in those fixtures.

“Well done to everyone there was some fantastic football played in good spirits from all players, teacher and parents.”
