MUM’S the word for a group of women who have set up their own football team.

Fed up with just standing on the touchline watching their children play, the female football followers at Globe Bullough Park Juniors decided to have a go themselves.

The Accrington-based team was launched in January and, since then, they have played a number of matches against the club’s junior teams.

But word soon got around that the Globe mums had set up a team and others have followed suit. They have just played a ‘double header’ charity match against their counterparts from Rosegrove Juniors which was held to raise funds for the Neonatal Unit (NICU) in Burnley.

“The team was started as a chance for mums of children who play at Globe to understand the game and also to have fun and keep fit,” said Amanda Leach, whose son Nathan, nine, will play for the club’s Under-11s when the new season kicks off in September.

“We also have members of the team who don’t have children who play at the club but are involved in some way. We have held a couple of charity matches against the children from Globe and sub money from those matches is going to our nominated charity.

“We decided on raising money for charity, we held a vote and the nominated charity is NICU in Burnley.”

However, the match against the Rosegrove mums was their debut adult game and after winning the first clash 6-1, and raising £150, Amanda said everyone in the team was buzzing.

“Since word got around that we had set up a mums team, a few local teams have now also set up mums teams. We were asked to play against Rosegrove mums. It was our first adult game and it was great fun.

“We actually won 6-1 so all the players were buzzing and the hard work training every week is certainly paying off.

“We raised around £150 towards our charity pot. We now have approximately £400.”

She added: “We will keep going as long as the mums enjoy it.”

The Globe mums, who are coached by Ben Taylor who runs the club’s Under-7s and Under-9s teams, won their second clash against Rosegrove 2-1. Next up is a clash with the Globe coaches.

Amanda added: “We have set up a charity match against the Globe coaches and also there are other teams being formed around the area so it’s an ongoing thing and we hope to raise loads of money for charity.”
