THREE school sports ambassadors have completed extra training so they can help to run indoor athletics competitions.

Seven Year 10 pupils at Fearns Community Sports College, Stacksteads, completed their sports ambassador training, but Sophie Radcliffe, Tanita Sims and Zara Pugh also stayed after school to complete a further sports hall athletics leadership course.

While others will be enjoying a half-term break from school, the trio will be helping School Games Organiser Nathan Bibby at Holy Trinity School, Stacksteads, where he will be running fitness sessions.

For Zara, 14, it will be the first time she has been back in the school since she left as a pupil.

She said: “It will be strange. We will be helping to set the equipment out and also encouraging the children to do the exercises.”

They all wanted to become sports ambassadors because they wanted to improve their leadership skills and they enjoy helping children to take part in sports.

Sophie, 14, said: “We will be teaching primary school age children how to do athletics and how to use the equipment properly.”

At open evening they were able to put their training into practice when they helped teachers to supervise children using the trampolines.

On the course they learnt about safeguarding and the importance of reporting any injuries that participants may receive and how to encourage someone who is reluctant to try to join in.
