RAILWAY Club made up for missing out on the Burnley Miners Sunday League Premier Division title after they beat Weir FC 2-1 to lift the Towneley Cup.

However they were made to work hard by their lower league rivals who only won three games in their Division One campaign, finishing one place off the bottom of the table.

Railway, runners-up to Burnley Westend in the Premier Division, got off to a flying start when Daniel Bleazard turned the ball home from close range. The favourites then created chance after chance but failed to take any of them.

And they were made to pay as Matthew Goodwin levelled matters five minutes before the break.

Weir grew in confidence after the break as both sides continued to carve out goal scoring opportunities.

But with time ticking away and extra time looming, Railway grabbed a winner from the unlikeliest of sources when right back Dale McVay rampaged forward, cut inside and unleashed a stunning 30 yard effort that flew in to the top corner - a goal worthy of winning any cup final.
