MELLOR Juniors U10s were crowned East Lancashire FA Spring Trophy winners 2016 after securing a 3-0 win against Barnoldswick Town in what was a keenly fought contest at the Anchor Ground, Darwen.

Goals from Aariz Patel, Joel Booth and Ethan Dewhurst saw the trophy heading up the hill to the local village team.

Mellor opened the scoring inside the opening minutes of the game with a well worked goal, when Patel finished smartly low to the keeper's right from inside the area.

Barlick slowly worked their way into the match and forced keeper Sam Page into action midway through the half; first saving high to his left and then low into the bottom right corner.

The second half saw Mellor continue to defend resolutely to protect their slender advantage as Barnoldswick desperately tried to force an equalizer.

But in the final 10 minutes, a quick break down the right hand side saw Booth cut inside and from the edge of the box and strike a left shot high past the Barlick keeper, for a crucial two goal lead.

And four minutes from time, Mellor put the game beyond Barnoldswick with a third goal when Dewhurst broke swiftly from the half way line to seal victory with a terrific solo effort.

The winning Mellor team included Sam Page, Sam King, Joseph Littler, Matt Wallbank (c), Ethan Dewhurst, Aariz Patel, Joel Booth. Subs: Bradley Vause, Liam Hoyle, Tom Greenhough.

n Mellor Juniors are seeking new recruits for next season's U11s campaign when they move to the 9v9 format.
