St Thomas’ named Pendle schools football champions

A Barrowford primary school kickstarted the New Year in style – after netting a prestigious football title.

The Year 5 and 6 football team St Thomas’ CE Primary School, Wheatley Lane Road, were named Pendle primary school champions after winning the finals of the Central Venue League held at Pendle Vale School.

After beating Blacko Primary 4-1 in their semi-final, they went on to secure a 1-0 victory over Earby Primary in the final.

The team will now represent Pendle at the ESFA Danone Nations' Under 11 seven-a-side Schools' Cup for School Teams in Skelmerdale this Saturday (January 16), where they will compete against school teams from across the county.

Rod Marsden, school governor and football coach, said: “This is a remarkable achievement for our little school and it is the first time in the school’s history that we have won this competition.

“The boys worked really hard, showed great sportsmanship and thoroughly deserved their victory. They are extremely excited about competing in the Lancashire qualifying competition this weekend and we wish them lots of luck.”
