LONGRIDGE United tasted the agony of penalty defeat in the quarter-finals of the Lancashire FA Amateur Shield at Charter Lane.

Longridge had held champions Charnock Richard 1-1, and when the tie was forced into extra time, they even had opportunities to win it.

However, it was Charnock who held their nerve to book a place in the last four, 6-5, at the expense of Lee Ashcroft’s brave battlers.

Royton Town also needed penalties to book their semi-finals berth, edging past Tempest United 4-3 after that game had also finished 1-1 in the mud and the rain.

Hurst Green, managed by Sam Hayes, who have struggled in the league this season, could find no solace in the knockout competition either, with the Ribble Valley side defeated 2-1 at Poulton.

The final tie, between Turton and Blackpool Wren Rovers was postponed.

But while the wet weather decimated the league programme, there was a real shock in one of the two games that got the go ahead in the Premier Division.

Leaders Fulwood Amateurs, six points clear at the summit and who have won a dozen of their fifteen starts, were thrashed 6-2 at Eagley.

And that cushioned the blow for third placed Longridge following their unfortunate Shield exit.

Player-manager Simon Whaley, Joe O’Keefe and Peter Ainscow all fired goal doubles for Eagley - while Mark Fiddler and Ged Smith scored for the visitors.

In the other game to start, Slyne with Hest (Mark Murphy 2, Jack Preston, Tom Entwistle) defeated Thornton Cleveleys (Harry Rowe) 4-1.

The majority of games were called off in Division One, but in the three games to get the green light there was no shortage of goals.

Hot-shot Joe McCann scored four times as Stoneclough overpowered Walney Island 6-1.

Milnthorpe Corinthians defeated Millom 4-1 with Peter Baxendale, Elliott Bousefield, Curtis Wood and Richard Sandham finding the target. and Ladybridge drew with Askam United,
