BURNLEY United’s promising start to their Premier Division campaign came to an abrupt halt at the hands of Fleetwood Hesketh.

United had cruised past Lostock St Gerards on the opening day and an emphatic midweek victory over Eagley at Barden Lane saw them claim maximum points from their first couple of games.

However, Fleetwood Hesketh provided much tougher opposition and Burnley had no answer to the visitors firepower as the Southport side scored twice in the first half through Jack McCluskey and Connor Wright.

Still, Burnley remain in fourth place behind Charnock Richard, Hesketh Bank and leaders Fulwood Amateurs.

Lee Ashcroft’s Longridge United have enjoyed a reasonable start too, and Lennie Reid’s early goal was enough to give them a slender 1-0 victory over Thornton Cleveleys and bank their second win of the campaign.

It was business as usual for champions Charnock Richard, who thrashed Lostock St Gerards 7-0, who have now leaked 18 goals in three games.

Not surprisingly Charnock Richard are the league’s top scorers and they will take some stopping as they get into their stride for another championship challenge.

Eagley’s unhappy start continued, though, the Bolton outfit crashing 4-1 at home to Hesketh Bank.

Hurst Green tasted defeat for the first time this season in Division One.

They made the long trip to Cumbria in good heart after their first day win over Dalton United.

However, despite a promising performance, they were beaten 1-0 at GSK Ulverston.

Haslingden St Mary’s were also in action in the county, and they too suffered a narrow defeat.

For the majority of the contest St Mary’s looked like they might bring home a point for their efforts, but Hawcoat Park claimed victory 4-3.

But there was a fine win for Mill Hill St Peters, who crushed Askam United 5-3.

In Division One Reserves, David Richmond and Ryan Machell were on the mark for Haslingden St Mary’s, but it was not enough to prevent a 3-2 reverse at Garstang.

Hurst Green, meanwhile, were held 3-3 at home by Euxton Villa.

Tonight Longridge Town host Lostock St Gerrards, who are without a point so far this season, with Fulwood Amateurs at Blackpool/Wren Rovers, Eagley at home to Charnock Richard, Hesketh Bank hosting Thornton Cleveleys, Crooklands Casuals at Vickerstown and Euxton Villa at home to Fleetwood Hesketh.

Burnley are in action tomorrow night away at Couppll United, with Garstang host Slyne with Hest.
