NATASHA Newell is hoping to use her first experience of international competition to get even better next year, writes Daria Neklesa.

The mum of three represented Team GB at the European Championships in Geneva recently where she finished 23rd out of 29 women (ages 40-44) in the ETU sprint distance triathlon.

Now the 42-year-old from the Ribble Valley can’t wait to try and qualifying for next year’s event.

It has been a remarkable journey for the swimming instructor, who just four years ago weighed 14 stone and was in the ‘obese’ weight category.

She joined a gym and began a long journey where she lost over five stone in weight and battled to take back control of her fitness.

“I’m now working up to the Europeans in Lisbon next year, and I’m hoping to use my experience to better my position,” said a delighted Newell. I feel so proud to have represented Great Britain.”

Newell took part in a 750m swim, a 20.4 km bike ride and a 5km run. She finished the race in 1hr 32, completing the swim in just 13:26mins - the fifth fastest time.

Newell said: “The first 50 metres of the swim were very hard going.

“It felt like there was no air and I couldn’t warm up. I’ve never experienced that before, but I’m pleased that I still managed to come out of the water in fifth place.

“The bike ride consisted of a three lap course which I found very difficult in the heat.

“There was a steep hill on each lap which was pure torture.

The crowds were amazing and my partner Tony Pilling was there to support me when I was in pain. I’m very grateful for all the good luck messages which motivated me.”
